6 Tips Before You Take Your First Dance Class
Dance is an art of expression, of talent, and of entertainment. People dance for many reasons – for fun or for professional reasons. Although there is a certain level of talent that is involved in learning to dance, dance can be taught. And there is something for everybody.
Dance classes are available in many places for all sorts of people. It is an interactive, social activity where people can come together to make art with their bodies.
1. Where can you find dance classes?
There are tons of dance schools which offer a variety of classes for different dancing types, and for people who dance at different levels and different ages. These dancing schools are often geared towards children and young adults, and are also more for people who are serious about dancing.
2. Available anywhere
Dance classes are often also available at community centres and through schools or clubs. These types of classes are often, although still serious about learning to dance, are more for people who are maybe new to the activity as an adult, or who are just trying it out for fun and who aren’t very serious about moving forward with it. These places will still usually offer a wide variety of types of dances and a few different levels like beginner, intermediate and advanced.
3. What types of dancing are there?
There are so many different types of dancing available, and with the world sharing culture, more dances from around the world are becoming available all the time.
Some of the most common dancing types include contemporary, ballet, lyrical, tap, hip hop and jazz. These are often offered at traditional dance schools and through community centres.
Some of the other classes that can be found, sometimes through dance schools although it is likely that the school would be specialized for certain types of dance, and sometimes through the community, are belly dancing, salsa, ballroom and tango. There are many, many, other types of dance that are available through different schools and centres. Dance can be so many different things to people, there is not one standard.
4. Why would someone take dance classes?
Dance is a great option as an artistic and active activity for children of any age. For adults, it can be something fun and different to break up the week, to get active, and to meet new people.
Some people may choose to continue dance they started as a child and to study and learn it so that they can do dance as a professional, either dancing in shows, teaching dance, or both.
5. How much do dance classes cost?
This is very much dependant on the location of the dance classes. Some small community centres may offer dance classes for as little as $30 – $50 for a session of a couple of months. Most dance school classes will cost much more than that, though, because there are more professional fees to be paid. More prestigious institutions are able to charge much more, however the quality of the teaching and the seriousness of the dance being done may also be much higher.
6. Some extras to consider
If you or your child will be doing performances as a result of the dance classes, there will also be costs for costumes for the performances and depending on the type of dance, there may be special shoes or footwear required for that type of dance. These fees are generally not included in base fees.
Dancing is a very versatile activity. It can be used for exercise, for fun, and for learning. Taking dance classes can provide a stable environment and a good place for people to convene, dance, and learn.
